Newport, RI, Historic Fort Adams – For many years Fort Adams has played host to reenactment groups covering wars from the Revolution through WWII.  If you have been among those able to view these events, perhaps you have wondered how the reenactors learn to reenact?  The New England Brigade’s Camp of Instruction is your chance to see for yourself.  Portraying the 15th Infantry Regiment of the Regular Army, the unit which garrisoned Fort Adams during the Civil War, the New England Brigade will be conducting its Camp of Instruction on the Parade Field of Historic Fort Adams on Saturday and Sunday, May 1-2, 2010.
Often organized during times of crisis, a Camp of Instruction was historically set up to improve the standards of the regular units of the United States Army and such is the New England Brigade’s intent for their Camp.  Open to the public at 11 a.m. each morning, visitors are encouraged to explore the encampment, where soldiers in authentic 19th century uniforms will invite them to spend a day in their life, and to learn about everything from cooking and camp life to military tactics and garrison duties at the Fort during the Civil War.  While there will be no pitched battle during the Camp of Instruction, there will be Infantry and Artillery drills and live fire exercise, as well as, several presentations and lectures about various aspects of the military life, tactics, and the duties of a Civil War soldier.  An ideal event for any history buff, this is also a family friendly and affordable event with all day admission priced at $8 for adults and $4 for children 6-17.  Family admission (two adults and up to 4 children) is $20.   The camp is open to the public until 4:00pm on Saturday and 2:00pm on Sunday and for those wishing to attend both days of the Camp, a special half price readmission for Sunday will be available.  Reopening for daily tours on Saturday, May 22nd, Historic Fort Adams is located in Fort Adams State Park on Harrison Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island.  For more information please visit http://www.fortadams.org or call (401)841-0707.
