Multnomah County is one of 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. Though smallest in area, it is the most populous as its county seat, Portland, is the state's largest city. In 2006, the county's population was 681,454. The county was likely named after Native American people first recorded in the journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Mulknomans, who lived in a village on the east side of present-day Sauvie Island. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 466 square miles (1,206 km²), of which, 435 square miles (1,127 km²) of it is land and 79 km² (30 sq mi or 6.53%) of it is water.
