Pierce County is the second most populous county in the U.S. state of Washington. Formed out of Thurston County on December 22, 1852, by the legislature of Oregon Territory , it was named for U.S. President Franklin Pierce. As of 2007, the population was 805,400. The county seat is Tacoma, on Commencement Bay, which is also the county's largest city. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,806 square miles (4,679 km²), of which, 1,679 square miles (4,348 km²) of it is land and 128 square miles (330 km²) of it (7.06%) is water.
