According to Valerie ‘The background to the modern day Bloomsday began in 1954 when poets Patrick Kavanagh and Anthony Cronin, together with some friends decided to mark the 50th anniversary of Bloomsday by a pilgrimage to the Martello Tower in Sandycove and a tradition was started that year’. Sandycove is on the DART rail line from Bray and thus easily accessible from Aughavannagh. Valerie comments ‘Bloomsday now involves a wide range of cultural activities combining Ulysses readings and dramatisations, pub crawls, bartender races and general merriment, much of it hosted by the James Joyce Centre in North Great George's Street in Dublin’s city centre. Enthusiasts often dress in Edwardian costume to celebrate Bloomsday, and retrace Bloom's route around Dublin via landmarks such as Davy Byrne's pub’.
