April 7, 2010 - PRLog -- If you have an ongoing problem with sinus drainage or find your sinuses are draining once in a while you may wonder if you have a sinus infection. Many people do associate drainage with an infection but drainage from the sinuses is perfectly normal if there is no infection. If there is an infection present the drainage may cause a slightly irritated throat or sore throat. This can usually be easily cured with a warm salt water gargle.

A quart of mucous needs to move through the nasal passages every day. It's when these passages get blocked that the sinuses become inflamed and a sinus infection starts. So it's important to keep the mucus flowing. Drinking lots of fluids is not often thought of as a preventative measure but proper hydration is paramount to keeping the sinuses healthy and working properly.

If you find that your sinus drainage is yellow or yellowish, you can be pretty certain that you do have a sinus infection. Once this happens you want to take drastic measures to clear it up naturally. No antibiotics-- they just don't work. They can't reach the sinuses and they're for bacterial infections and most sinus infections are caused by fungus - mold.

Decongestants can cause other problems with numerous side effects and some of the damage you won't see or know about right away. Sinus busters in pill form should not be taken. And antihistamines should not be taken unless you're sure it is an allergy and you usually take them for an allergy that is present because antihistamines will dry up the sinus drainage. You don't want to dry up the drainage because it will not be able to move through the sinuses and nasal passages. The nasal passages may be swollen or inflamed making it even harder to get through.

Now you can have an infection in the sinuses brewing for several days before any yellow mucous shows up in your drainage. And sometimes mucous can be greenish, clear or pale. But In most cases the drainage will be yellow. If you even suspect you might have an infection starting because of symptoms of more drainage, no drainage, and stuffy nose, pain or pressure in the forehead or cheeks, tooth pain, headache, are sneezing off and on or are unusually tired then you want to take care of it right away with remedies and natural sinus treatments at home. If you are careful to watch your symptoms and quickly determine that a sinus infection may be starting you can catch it before it progresses into 3 weeks of suffering. There is a lot you can do to get relief.
