Do You Have the Travel Bug?

Make the most out of your summer vacation with six UMSL courses geared to enhance your travel experiences

April 7, 2010 - PRLog -- St. Louis, MO – The University of Missouri–St. Louis offers six courses starting in April and continuing throughout the summer that will help travelers get the most out of their experiences. These travel bug courses and workshops cover topics such as foreign languages, travel writing and photography.

The first course is titled Haitian Creole and has two, two-day evening sessions, April 21 and 28, and May 19 and 26. This workshop is designed to introduce Creole to those seeking to work or volunteer on the earthquake relief effort in Haiti. It will focus on basic conversation and vocabulary as well as offer essential sentences to help travelers communicate with those in need.

Additional language courses include French for Travelers and Mandarin Chinese for Travelers. The introductory course in conversational French is 6:00–8:00 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, June 14–30. The introductory course in conversational Chinese will be 6:30–8:10 p.m., Thursdays, June 17–22. Both courses will emphasize developing basic skills, and introducing essential vocabulary and cultural issues.  

Two writing courses include Travel Writing: Journaling and Travel Writing for Publication. The journaling workshop is Thursday evenings from June 17–24. Participants will learn how to create three-dimensional, written memories by using rich sensory details and the emotions that they evoke. Special tips for scrapbookers will also be covered. Travel Writing for Publication is a two-day workshop, 6:00–8:00 p.m., July 1 and 8. This course teaches students to write to their readers as though taking them on a personal tour of the space, and covers variations of technique, tips for analyzing the preferred style of each editor, and methods for successfully marketing articles.

The digital camera is essential on all vacations. UMSL’s Introduction to Digital Photography will teach students all they need to know to get the most out of their camera and feeling like a professional in no time. The course is Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, June 14–July 10.
