Runway4Life Fashion Show
The May long weekend in Kelowna is typified by burning rubber, fuel aromas and car enthusiasts polishing up their latest project, but this year there is something new and exciting for those less enthusiastic about cars. Antares Media, a TV and movie production company is presenting Runway4Life, a Fashion Show and Benefit weekend to be held at the picturesque Cove Lakeside Resort in West Kelowna.
The event is a fundraiser for Rally4Life, an Okanagan project that is making a positive difference by delivering clean water and proper sanitation to communities in need across the world and creating media attention with Canada’s first competitive entry in the 2011 Dakar Rally, as part of the Bowler Offroad Team.
The fashion runway will feature sustainable clothing by Flora and Fauna, eco friendly designs by First Nations Kulu Designs, accessories by Friis & Co and Patina Bronsino and the finale will feature haute couture by Christopher Bates and Malene Grotrian who was featured at the New York Fashion Week in 2009. Musical interludes will be
provided by Rosemary Siemens, a classical violinist who has played at the Vatican, and Grammy nominated Splitting Adam from Vancouver. There will also be a live and silent auction, plus an after show party for VIP’s. The event begins at 2pm on Sunday May 23rd and tickets are now on sale. Alexandra Thompson of Antares Media and Producer for the TV show Race4Life commented “It has been our objective for some time to arrange a significant fundraiser for this project. We have seen what Rally4Life is doing as we have commenced filming and it is easy to get drawn in to supporting such a worthy cause”
Guests will also have a chance to check out their physical fitness during the weekend. On Saturday May 22nd Shane Pizzey of Pinnacle Elite Athlete in Kelowna will also be offering personalised fitness assessments, plus other special guests to be announced.
The Rally4life project is raising funds for several projects already identified. One example involves FeViva, an Okanagan based charity from Westbank who have been working in the Aweil region in Southern Sudan, bordering Darfur, an area in desperate need of help. Rally4Life will partner with them to construct a well with the help of Just A Drop, who specialize in such work. Jackie Jennings-Bates, Charity coordinator for Rally4Life said “Two million refugees have returned to the area in recent years. 87% of the population do not have access to proper sanitation and wells need to be drilled to reach uncontaminated water. According to the “Sphere Standard” which is an International standard based on minimum requirements for disaster relief, there should be one water outlet per 500 people, which amounts to approximately 1.5 litres of water per person per day. The people of Aweil currently have one well for every 4,500 people”

The DAKAR began in 1977, when Thierry Sabine got lost on his motorbike in the Libyan desert during the Abidjan-Nice Rally.
