Forty percent of the nation's addicted people are women. Addiction affects women differently. Among the differences:
• Women show signs of addiction earlier
• Women show more severe symptoms
• Mental health complications are more prevalent
• Increased barriers to seeking treatment
Yet historically, seeking and obtaining treatment has been difficult for women due to family, social and cultural patterns. Women often place nurturing and caretaking roles before their own needs, and often delay seeking help for their addiction. Feelings of shame and guilt also deter addicted women from seeking help, even when their lives depend on it.
The Harbor House Clinic provides specialized treatment for women through our Women’s Substance Abuse Treatment Program. We understand the issues unique to women beginning their recovery journey, and we provide comprehensive clinical services that address a woman's issues and needs in a safe, nurturing and caring woman-centered environment. Counseling services are free for pregnant women and women with dependent children. For all others treatment is provided on a sliding fee scale beginning at zero cost.
Treatment is both individualized and group oriented, based on the needs of each woman. Addiction treatment and mental health services are integrated, ensuring that co-occurring mental health issues are treated. As with all Harbor House programs, recovery support services after initial treatment provide a successful path for long-term recovery success.
