7th and 8th Grade Classes Create an Online Memorial for Rwanda Through Twitter
Prosper, Texas – April 6, 2010- A small town junior high class of GT Students decided that the Rwandan genocide victims needed a memorial.
On April 6, 1994, the Rwandan presidential plane was shot down, marking the beginning of the genocide. Brutal slaughters continued for 100 days. Nearly one million innocent men, women, and children died. To this day, their only memorial is a church where thousands were murdered, and where their bones still lie today.
The Rogers Middle School Gifted and Talented Class have created a website dedicated to giving the Rwanda victims a memorial. Their plan is to post one Tweet from their Twitter, teensMAD4Rwanda, stating their mission and giving a link to their website. With that one Tweet, along with countless emails and letters, their goal is to receive one million responses in one hundred days.
“Each comment with represent an innocent person who was murdered in the one hundred days of genocide,” says Alyssa Y., one of the students in the class.
The class hopes that even if they can’t build a memorial, the website could serve as an online tribute to the victims. They plan to launch the website on April 6th, the day the genocide began.
These young people want to change the way everyone views hate and tolerance. With enough determination and hard work, there’s no stopping them.
