April 6, 2010 - PRLog -- (Boynton Beach, Fla. April 5, 2010) - The Florida Constitution, as it is currently written, does not allow the State to dictate teacher salaries. Salary levels are negotiated at the local level.

“A little known fact about the SB6/HB-7189 bill currently being considered is it puts teachers on a salary schedule, as established by the FLDOE, that requires 50%+ of a teacher’s compensation to be based on student testing gains,” says Landolfi. “How can a teacher plan to buy a house, know what kind of car they can afford, or save for retirement when they don't know how much they will be paid until student tests come in?”

“This same flawed salary schedule does not take into account length of service or advanced degrees. What will now motivate a teacher to further their own education and obtain Masters or Doctorate level degrees, which they can then use to more effectively teach their students?” Landolfi asks. “How will they even know if they can afford to go to school?”

SB6/HB-719 attempts to “backdoor” a provision to create a salary control center in Tallahassee that would have final say on who gets paid what. Nothing salary-wise would be open to collective bargaining, which many times is the only thing holding back the insanity of the of the local School Boards.

Instead of discounting Knowledge and Experience, Landolfi would push for a common sense system that focuses on teaching, not testing. He believes Florida is good at churning out students by the truckload that pass the FCAT and pass, but not succeed in the workplace.

Instead of threatening teachers by possibly withholding half of their salary, he would pay for performance, with bonuses for outstanding results at the end of the year.

Landolfi would fight to increase the amount teachers’ salaries based on advanced degrees and time in service rather than student test scores. He would make it “make sense” to pursue a career in Florida Education again by limiting the power School Board and other government bureaucracies have to make our teachers jump through hoop after hoop. Landolfi’s plan is to just let teachers do what they love to do; teach students and educate tomorrow’s leaders.
