When the time has come to move your elder into a nursing home, you may be faced with the task of disposing of their home and all the contents. This can be a very daunting task for a number of reasons. Having gone through this myself, I can tell you it can be an emotional roller coaster.
Here are my top 6 tips for dealing with this entire process:
1. Be sure your elder finalizes their will before moving to a long term care facility
This is important so that you can save on storage costs. Any items can be given to heirs right away.
2. Set up a team of professionals
You are going to need an attorney to protect both your elder and yourself, a Realtor (one that is located near the house), a pest control service and a home inspector to go through the home before you list it.
3. Clean up the property
Clear out anything that you'd clear out at your home. Things like trash that has accumulated outside the home, any yard waste, or dead wild animals that may have made the garage or basement home. Don't forget to mow the lawn as well.
4. Contact the local trash hauler or city sanitation department
Be sure you know when pick up dates are and what they accept. You may run into fines if you don't follow the rules.
5. Arrange for a dumpster for a large home
You may not want to deal with local trash pick up rules or you simply have too much to put out by the curb. A dumpster can save you a lot of hassle. These can be much less expensive than a fine from the city for not complying with their rules.
