Matt Banish doesn’t just think people are looking for healthier breakfast options. He knows it.

After a decade of testing, almost all of Subway’s 23,000 U.S. restaurants rolled out their healthy omelet breakfast nationwide Monday.

And the franchise operator of five Subway restaurants in Spartanburg County believes his parent company’s launch of a new breakfast menu will be a big hit.

After a decade of testing, almost all of Subway’s 23,000 U.S. restaurants began to roll out the breakfast service nationwide on Monday.

“There are huge possibilities in this,” Banish said. “We have served breakfast before, but this is completely different. (Subway) has added to that and made it better — more uniform. It’s an opportunity to expand our ability to serve and make it more convenient for the customer.”

The new menu sticks with Subway’s sandwich specialty, the foundation of the company’s business and healthy message.

Featuring customizable omelet sandwiches, the menu options include a combination of eggs or egg whites, cheese, ham, bacon, steak, sausage, peppers and onions, in addition to Subway’s other toppings.

Sandwiches are served on English muffins, flatbread or traditional sub rolls. Prices range from $1.75 to $6.

The company also has inked a deal with Starbucks’ subsidiary Seattle’s Best and will serve the coffeemaker’s gourmet roasts as part of the breakfast service, which runs from 7 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, and 9 to 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Banish said the added bonus for customers is that the company will still serve its regular menu during breakfast.

Although he would not elaborate, Banish said Subway has a “big surprise” planned for its customers on April 15.

In South Carolina, Subway will try to take a bite out of the state’s annual $548 million breakfast segment by taking away market share from some of the industry’s heaviest hitters, including McDonald’s and Hardee’s.

Ali Saifi, president and CEO of Subway Development Corp. of South Carolina Inc., said the addition of breakfast at the company’s 366 restaurants in the state has the potential to create up to 1,000 new jobs.

The company has about 4,000 employees in South Carolina.

“I think it’s going to be a big shock,” Saifi said. “Nobody thinks of Subway as a breakfast destination. We spend a lot of time developing delicious menu items that will enhance our healthy reputation. Our biggest obstacle will be getting people to try it.”
