Woodland Hills, CA, Green Edge Systems, a leader in technology solutions for K-12 school food services presents Epicure Digitals’ K-12 Digital Menu Board System with Nutritional Labeling to meet nutritional labeling requirements in the new Health Care Reform law - helping K-12 schools fight Child Obesity and promote K-12 Breakfast Programs.
The new health care reform act passed into law by Congress sets a national standard for nutritional labeling on food establishments with 20 or more locations.
Green Edge Systems represents Epicure Digital Systems in the K-12 market. Epicure Digital Systems is a digital menu board company uniquely integrating its expertise in software technology, restaurant operations and food service marketing to create digital signage solutions for the food service industry. Its core product is the Epicure Digital Menu System. Its core services are menu engineering and content creation.
Epicure Digital pioneered the display of nutritional information on digital menu boards in 2003 for the U.S. Navy. Every menu item description includes the portion size, number of calories, grams of fat, and amount of cholesterol, and a ‘red heart’ icon beside menu items when the item ‘meets healthy Navy option standards’.
Nutritional menu labeling by Epicure Digital informs customers to make healthier meal choices by displaying nutritional data and icons next to menu items on digital menu boards entered manually or imported from a third party system.
Epicure Digital Systems designs customized digital menu boards that solve complex menu engineering and point-of-sale marketing issues. By creatively combining information, motion, imagery and food photography, they produce visually compelling multimedia menus and promotions to help sell menu items and enhance the dining experience. They call this experience: The Cure for the Menu Bored.
Epicure Digital clients include educational institutions, hospitals, independent and chain restaurants, contract food service companies, business & industry, and cinemas and casinos among others.
The company's website (http://www.epicuredigital.com) has an extensive portfolio of its client's menu board installations including many schools.
The new law exempts small businesses, and does not apply to daily or temporary specials and customized orders. It requires the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to propose specific regulations not later than one year from now. Those regulations will be finalized through a formal rule making process, and the FDA must make quarterly reports on its progress to Congress.
Details of the regulation may remain unclear until the U.S. Food and Drug Administration determines the standards over the next year.
Digital menu boards provide a versatile option, and with costs for the LCD screens having come down in recent years, a cost effective one.
While static boards can certainly handle the additional information, digital boards allow schools to update their calorie information every time an ingredient or vendor changes, which also impacts the nutritional values.
A hungry stomach can lead to an empty mind. Breakfast helps students be their best. Studies conclude that good nutrition leads to improved classroom performance, higher test scores and better behavior. It can be a challenge to get students to the cafeteria before school, promoting breakfast programs on menu boards is a main way to promote increased participation in breakfast programs and fight Child obesity.
