THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF.--The Conejo Valley YMCA Sharks swim team took first place at the Channel Island Swim League spring championship on March 27 at Newbury Park High School. This is the Conejo Valley YMCA Sharks' third consecutive championship title.

The YMCA Channel Island Swim League is made up of teams from nine YMCAs in Santa Barbra and Ventura Counties. YMCA swim teams compete throughout the year, culminating in a spring championship meet.

"Our team is made up of an especially talented and supportive group of swimmers," says Tarrik Daou, Shark's swim coach. "With so much going on in their lives outside of swimming, I'm privileged and proud of their commitment to the sport. After the five-hour meet, eight of our team members performed in a local musical that evening. Many of our team was in the audience cheering them on.”

The Conejo Valley YMCA Sharks relay teams took gold in the age 8 and under, 9 and 10, 11 and 12 and 13 and up age divisions for the 100 and 200 freestyle relays.

Multiple gold winners were Shark swimmers  Simin Ng, age six, 25 butterfly, 25 backstroke and 100 freestyle relay; Kuranda Medina, age 10, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly, 100 individual medley and 200 freestyle relay; Holland Logtenberg, age 13, 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay; Michael Shelly, age 14, 100 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle relay; and Michael Potter, age 17, 100 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 50 freestyle and 200 free relay.

"The Channel Island Swim League has turned out high school varsity swimmers in many of our local high schools, " says Daou. "Our swimmers have moved on to USA teams and some have qualified for the Junior Olympics. The league has a talented group of coaches whose dedication to the individual swimmer's technique and mental disciple is to be commended. The Y teaches far more then strokes. It integrates core values of honesty, carrying, respect and responsibility."

The Conejo Valley YMCA offers a full spectrum of aquatic programs for children and adults including year round indoor/outdoor swim lessons, pre-swim team stroke lessons, three levels of swim teams and a high school-specific swim technique and endurance program.
