Hurricane Wind Power LLC of Virginia has developed a residential wind turbine capable of charging 12 volt battery systems in winds as low as 4-5 MPH. The system has produced as much as 18-20 volts in winds that would typically not be strong enough to spin existing wind generators on the market. It has been a downfall of wind power and many of the residential wind turbines on the market that they produce no power at all until wind of 12-15 miles per hour. For many area of the world this represents many days the wind generator is essentially useless.
This represents a significant advancement based on patented technologies in the wind generators, rotor and blade systems, as well as mounting system. The generator is based on the Hurricane line of three generators that reach 12 volts at 120, 80 and 40 RPM respectivley wth the Category 5 model having dual stators and dual output allowing the unit to be wired in series or parallel to either increase voltage or amperage. This allows flexibility for the DIY turbine builder to do testing and figure out the best configurations for their site whether the case be 12, 24, or 48 volt sytems based on site considerations wind levels and individual needs. The patented low profile stator allows the generator to begin turning with very little torque. This design is patented and uses less iron allowing the magnets within the generator to break free in lower winds. It also allows the generator manufacturer to use more copper ultimately making more power.
The blades feature a sturdy galvanized steal that is swept in a manner to produce greater torque than blades from other manufactures. The "Storm Rotation Blades" are 3 bladed rotors that with the hub span almost 9 feet. It is the large rotor in comparison to other manufacturer that allows the Hurricane Wind generator to make power when other turbines are just pin wheels in the yard. According to Jones the owner it" takes power to make power". Other wind generator companies with rotors half the size and less than a 3rd in volume can't expect to make the power the we do. Its a simple matter of physics. Further taking the approach that many companies are engaging in of adding a lot of blades to make up for the inept design in not a substitute. Wind turbine 101....how many large wind turbines commercially have you seen with 5 - 12 blades ? I am going to assume none. This is because the engineers have done the physics and determined that the Tip Speed Ratio physics involved makes the optimum number of blades three. This is not to say that there is never an application where this can vary slightly but companies adding as many as 12 blades is simply inefficient. It would be essentially like running into a wall of wind.
The sleek Hurricane mount features a longer tail that keeps the generator pointed into the wind for optimum performance as well as sits on a spit collar as a weight relief to keep the hurricane pointed in the right directions. This unit has a mechanical furling mechanism built into the mount protecting it from high winds as well.
The Hurricane will bring power to rural areas with even the lightest winds and is ideal for rural property owners wishing to find and inexpensive power solution as well as home owners and hunting cabins.
