The 2010 Range Rover is a supercharged two-fingered salute to the killjoys who would have us all driving electric pods and diesel-powered shopping trolleys. It weighs more than two tons, is powered by a faintly ludicrous 503bhp supercharged V8 and will — if you drive carefully — return 19mpg.

Although this is technically a face lifted version of the current Range Rover, it has had more extreme surgery than most. The biggest change, in the range-topping supercharged petrol version at least, is the engine. Out goes the old unit, and in comes the

Jaguar-sourced V8. It adds more than 100bhp, reducing the 0-60mph time from more than 7sec to under 6sec while also cutting fuel consumption and emissions. When you’re sitting that high up and you call on the V8 to do its stuff, it feels heroically, preposterously fast.

The modified cabin includes a TFT (thin film transistor) instrument display — a more sophisticated version of the LCD screen. There is also an entertainment unit that simultaneously allows the driver to see navigation information and the passenger to watch a DVD, simply by looking at the same screen from a different angle. Inside, the leather is even classier than before and the switches on the center console are tidied and reordered to make them easier and more logical to use. The big Terrain Response dial that adapts the car’s ride height, damping, steering and throttle responses to its surroundings is as before, but it gains new settings to help you clamber over rocks or cross an expanse of sand.
