By: Friends of 1923 “The MidKnight Inventors” Issued by FRIENDS OF 1923 For Immediate Release April 2, 2010 Contact: WW-P Robotics Team 1923 Wins the FIRST Robotics Engineering Inspiration Award – Qualifies Team for World Championship in April West Windsor-Plainsboro FIRST Robotics Team 1923, the MidKnight Inventors, have won the FIRST Robotics Competition “Engineering Inspiration Award” at the Boston Regional this past weekend, qualifying them to compete in the World Championships taking place in Atlanta in April 2010. Considered to be the second most coveted award granted by FIRST Robotics, the Engineering Inspiration Award celebrates a team’s outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering and engineers, both within their school and in their community. The team now faces the challenge of raising $25,000 from the West Windsor-Plainsboro community in only two weeks to cover registration and travel expenses for the championship event. Information concerning team sponsorship is available by email request at donations@firstrobotics1923.org. “Our team is depending upon our gracious friends and sponsors to make this trip possible,” explained Michael Stevens, a volunteer adult mentor to the team. This is quite an honor for the entire West Windsor-Plainsboro community. Our students will be working extremely hard over the coming days to obtain the funding necessary to make their dream a reality. No donation is too small and all will be greatly appreciated.” Team 1923 represents the West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District with students from High School North, High School South and local home schoolers. The team was founded in 2006 and won the FIRST Robotics New Jersey Regional in 2009. Following an aggressive growth strategy, the team tripled in size for the 2010 competition season. The mission of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition is to inspire young people to become leaders in the science and technology fields. Robotics teams must meet a unique challenge each year by creating their own robot to compete with and against teams from around the world. In this year's game, students designed, built and programmed robots to compete in a soccer-style game called "Breakaway." “FIRST is about a lot more than just building a robot,” said Kelsey Stevens, one of Team 1923’s robot drivers and a sophomore at WW-P High School North. “We also learn about teamwork, working within a budget, fund raising, and entrepreneurship. This year, graduates from FIRST Robotics teams will receive over $12 million in college scholarships.” Sponsors of the WW-P FIRST Robotics Team 1923 include Bristol-Myers Squibb, Integra Foundation, Janssen, division of Ortho-McNeil- [Full color, high-resolution JPGs of the team, the robot and the competition are also available] End
