April 1, 2010 - PRLog -- LEXINGTON, KY (April 1, 2010)-The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program combines the art and science of meditation to transform the way you relate to stress. This eight session intensive program was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School.  Lexington Healing Arts Academy offers this course Sundays, May 2 through June 27, 2010.

MBRS is highly regarded for making mindfulness meditation accessible for people from all walks of life.  Scientific studies have shown this program to decrease psychological and physical pain and discomfort and improve the overall quality of life for participants. The Center for Mindfulness (University of Massachusetts Medical School) reports, “Our work over the past twenty-eight years has shown consistent, reliable, and reproducible demonstrations of major and clinically relevant reductions in medical and psychological symptoms across a wide range of medical diagnoses, including many different chronic pain conditions [Kabat-Zinn, 1982; Kabat-Zinn, Lipworth and Burney, 1985; Kabat-Zinn et al, 1986], other medical diagnoses [Kabat-Zinn and Chapman-Waldrop, 1988]; and in medical patients with a secondary diagnosis of anxiety and/or panic [Kabat-Zinn et al, 1992; Miller et al, 1995], over the eight weeks of the MBSR intervention, and maintenance of these changes in some cases for up to four years of follow-up.”

Sessions will be from 3:00-5:00 PM, except June 20th will be A Day of Mindfulness from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM., and no session Memorial Weekend May 30. Registration, including material fee, is $285 with an early bird registration of $260 before April 15.  The classes will be taught by Anita Courtney; both have completed the MBSR Professional Training at the Duke Center for Integrative Medicine.  They have many years experience teaching and practicing yoga and meditation. “When mindfulness becomes a way of life, the impact of stress on the individual is diminished.  Patterns of tension and turmoil are replaced with self assurance and ease,” says instructor Toni Reiss.
