This important and riveting book tells what it was like to live in South Africa during Apartheid.
Author Andrina Abrahamse was born in 1958, when South Africa was experiencing one of its most degrading eras, which lasted until 1994. During Apartheid, atrocities were commonplace.
Abrahamse writes a personal account of her experiences as a young girl, coming of age under Apartheid. Drina, as she was known, suffered atrocities beyond comprehension as a child. Beatings were the norm. She says she kept her sanity by thinking, “If I can learn something every time I cry, the tears will not have been in vain.”
Her formative years were filled with memories of a peace-loving people who were transformed into a bitter mass, its children turned into soldiers or left to roam the streets. The government ignored the deadly AIDS epidemic that killed indiscriminately and left in its wake orphans, who became street people.
As an abused child herself, Abrahamse’s sensitivity to the street children’s plight was intensified, giving her a calling to become a nurse. She later moved to the United States, where she and her family found themselves evacuees after Hurricane Rita. Looking into the eyes of victims already suffering because of Hurricane Katrina, brought her back to another time, place and people, who continue to suffer on a scale that seems insurmountable.
The author’s story gives voice to the children who still suffer. This book will educate, heal and inspire, and it does so with poignant dignity. You will see Through the Eyes of a survivor.
