Recently released market study: Bangladesh Telecommunications Report Q2 2010

New Fixed Networks research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

April 5, 2010 - PRLog -- Bangladesh's mobile sector ended 2008 with a total subscriber base of 45.164mn, according to the results released by its six mobile operators. The market expanded by 28.5% during the year, as compared to 2007 and 2006, at 62.4% and 110.4%, respectively. The most significant decline during the year occurred in the last quarter ended December 2008, with a net loss of 482,000 subscribers reported, as compared to net addition gains of 1.982mn in Q308 and 4.773mn and 3.737mn net additions in Q208 and Q108, respectively. While much of the blame for this slowdown in growth has been placed on the government's reregistration programme, the issue of SIM taxation is also said to be responsible for this in part. Although the taxation on SIM cards was introduced in 2005, and which have been absorbed at cost to the operator, as of September 2008, mobile operators were seeing their subsidies as reasons behind their losses. Operators are now looking to see a reduction in SIM taxation, which would end with lower connection costs, and hoped-for resumed stronger growth in the market. Additional competition to the mobile sector is also expected to come from the 3G sector, with the BTRC confirming plans to award 3G licences by March 2009. However, with this date already delayed and following postponement in previous months, it does not appear likely that 3G services will be launched before H109. Bangladesh's operators already have a range of products and services making up their value-added service portfolio, but largely based on 2G technology, and therefore restricted to using SMS as a means through which such data services as ringtones, music downloads and even banking are carried out. In view of this, and with the need for operators to progress beyond their existing capabilities to capture new revenue growth streams, the need for 3G licensing is important. Operators looking to offer 3G services will require additional spectrum to support their services, and while  Grameenphone,  Banglalink and  Aktel have all been provided with additional spectrum, this is to largely aid their rapidly expanding subscriber bases. In this quarter's report, we have provided for the first time information on the non-voice services of mobile operators, offering a full update to our mobile section. In our Q309,  BMI will look to provide additional information on fixed-line and broadband services, which has remained stagnant due to the introduction of new chapters in this report.
