For one thing, online degree programs tend to be more convenient that traditional colleges and universities because classes can be taken at home at the pace necessary for the individual. Also, online programs tend to be friendlier to the working adult, who may be unable to take classes during the day while he or she is at work, and may find night and weekend classes to be limited.

Hector Milla Editor of the "Online Degrees In USA" website -- http://www.OnlineDegreesUSA.org -- pointed out;

“…Although many people are attracted to the increased convenience of online schools, the number one reason why people pursue online degrees is the reduced cost. As college tuition at public and private universities continues to increase, many people are turning to alternate and less expensive means of obtaining a degree. Often, this means pursuing a degree at an online institution. In most cases, taking courses online is a lot less expensive than taking them at traditional universities. Some of the factors that lead to decreased costs in online programs are explained below…”

Lower Tuition

The cost of tuition is steep at public universities and outrageous at most private schools. But tuition is usually reasonable for online programs. Why is this? Well, there are a lot of costs that are eliminated when running an online school. For example, the cost of building or renting space for classes is not necessary if the students are all taking the classes virtually and in their own homes. Also, online colleges do not need to pay to clean and maintain classroom space. Expenses such as electricity, heating and plumbing all add up quickly, but these also are negated in online degree programs.

Transportation

“…Younger students usually are able to relocate to residence halls on campus or off campus housing that is within walking distance of college classes. Students who live on or near campus have very low transportation costs. Unfortunately, this is usually not an option for parents or working adults who wish to keep their jobs. Instead, these people have to devote large portions of their paychecks to buying gas or bus tickets in order to commute to school. Taking classes online eliminates these costs, since students are able to attend and study for class from the comfort of their homes…” added H. Milla.
