Workers everywhere are looking for ways to update their skills and make themselves more marketable. One of the best ways to achieve the better job or promotion is to return to school.

April 4, 2010 - PRLog -- Online schools seemed to be the answer when they first appeared on the internet, but they were prohibitively expensive for many workers. Now, however, as more and more schools and programs are available, the rates have become much more reasonable.

Hector Milla Editor of the "Online Degrees In USA" website -- http://www.OnlineDegreesUSA.org -- pointed out;

“…Expenses for these courses vary not only according to the institution but by the degree, as well. Bachelor’s degrees are offered in the same fields one would find in a brick-and-mortar school. They typically run for 120 semester credits and cost $45,000-$55,000…”

Graduate degrees are also available through the internet. Master’s degrees usually require about 65 credits at an average price of $400/credit. Doctorates, available in many disciplines including technology and education, typically require about 60 credits. Expenses average about $725 per credit although some are less than $600. Both graduate degrees do tend to have extra fees attached, as well, particularly to residency courses. These fees can run nearly $2000, not included room, board and transportation for the 2-4 day seminars. All in all, a Master’s will run about $27,500, and a PhD will cost about $50,000 online.

These numbers aren’t necessarily all-inclusive. For instance, most courses require books, which set the average student back almost $500 per semester in 2008. Web-based classes also have technical requirements that traditional classes don’t, so there may be costs for students to upgrade computers and internet connections.

“…But there is hope for those who find these numbers unmanageable. Financial aid that is available to students at traditional schools is available to online students, as well. For instance, the Federal Pell Grant given to undergraduate students based upon need is given for online studies. Other governmental grants are awarded, sometimes based upon a student’s field of study. Loans can come from a variety of sources, and almost all institutions offer scholarship opportunities. Most internet colleges and universities claim that over 75% of their students receive some kind of aid…” added H. Milla.

The money spent earning any of these degrees can be earned back quickly in the job market, and the flexibility and ease of internet learning makes it a viable option for many. Since fees vary widely among institutions, research comparing costs before enrolling can save a student a tremendous amount of money.
