It is usually a two year program for the full time student and focuses more on technical skills than the academics required for a bachelor’s degree. It will take longer for the part-time student to complete. Perhaps as long as four years.

Hector Milla Editor of the "Online Degrees In USA" website -- http://www.OnlineDegreesUSA.org -- pointed out;

“…Pursuing an education online has become a very popular route to getting a degree for those who must also hold a job. There is a greater level of flexibility than physically attending a college or university, but it requires a lot of discipline and motivation. Many programs are lenient with the amount of time allowed for the student to finish the course work. This is especially important for those students who are employed full- time and can only complete a limited amount of class work each semester…”

Online education provides opportunities for better paying, more fulfilling nursing careers, but diligent research is necessary to find the best degree program. The first step in finding a school that offers a suitable program is checking with the state board of nursing. Each state has its own nursing board, and many of them have websites. They will provide a list of approved schools to chose from. It is very important to enroll in a program that is accepted in the state or it may be impossible to obtain a license after graduation.

There may be several, suitable schools that will have to be compared. Tuition cost and the length of the program are significant considerations. Online degrees are usually more expensive to obtain than traditional ones. Inquire about financial aid programs if financial assistance is needed. While much of the coursework is completed online, the clinical courses must be done offline in a healthcare facility. Be sure the facility is reasonably close.

“…When a school has been selected, speak with an advisor. Discuss what types of jobs will be available upon graduation. The advisor will help to map the course and explain the particulars of the curriculum. Most nursing programs have prerequisites that must be completed before applying for admittance into the actual nursing program. Upon satisfactory completion of the prerequisites there may be an examination or interview with the program director before being accepted into the nursing school…” added H. Milla.
