More Brits Scared Of Clowns Than Flying

Whilst many believe flying to be one of the most common phobias, new research by a leading online independent travel agent specialising in holidays to Tenerife has found that more of the British public have a phobia of clowns.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Mar 31, 2010 -
A new nationwide study of 1,976 people aged 18-30 by www.tenerife.co.uk has found that more people have a fear of clowns, known as Coulrophobia, than flying, a fear known as Aerophobia.

tenerife.co.uk commissioned the poll to look into people's fears; as a travel agent they wanted to uncover whether flying was a phobia that was highly ranked when compared to other things people were scared of. The research found that flying was actually a less common fear than clowns, needles and spiders.

When asked the multi-answer question, 'Which of the following are you scared of?' http://www.tenerife.co.uk found the top ten phobias, based on the percentage of people who admitted being affected by the issue were;

1.   Spiders      54% (Arachnophobia)
2.   Needles      51% (Trypanophobia)
3.   Clowns      44% (Coulrophobia)
4.   Flying         32% (Aerophobia)
5.   Confined Spaces   23% (Claustrophobia)
6.   Dying         19% (Thanatophobia)
7.   Germs      14% (Mysophobia)
8.   Heights      11% (Acrophobia)
9.   Strangers       3% (Xenophobia)
10.   Vomit         2% (Emetophobia)

http://www.tenerife.co.uk further questioned the respondents who didn't have a fear of flying. 67% of those that said they wouldn't be frightened during a flight said they felt safer on a plane than they did in a car. Further findings from the study include nearly a third, 31%, of the respondents claiming the flight was one of the things they most looked forward to about a holiday.

Speaking about the fact flying appeared as a less common phobia than clowns, spiders and needles, Chris Brown, Managing Director of tenerife.co.uk, said;

"You often hear about people who are afraid of flying and we really wanted to look into how this phobia compared to other fears. Phobias are no laughing matter, but it's difficult not to see the funny side when more are scared of clowns than flying. Clowns are supposed to make people laugh, but I guess films like Steven King's "It" haven't helped and many people would rather be 30,000 feet in the air than in the same room as a clown."
