Agricultural Displays & Southern Folklife Artists Take Center Stage at 2010 ACEF

Agricultural displays and the Southern Folk Life Art exhibit take center stage at the 6th annual Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival introducing all to a diversity of folk skills dating back to the pioneer days.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Mar. 31, 2010 - Agricultural displays and the Southern Folk Life Art exhibit take center stage at the 6th annual Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival introducing all to a diversity of folk skills dating back to the pioneer days. The “Down on the Farm” area, introduced during the 2009 festival, features a Bluegrass music stage, antique tractors, demonstrations by quilters, farriers, basket makers, and much more.

New for this year’s event is quilling demonstrations. Artist Andrea Morgan joins other southern folklife artists who will be demonstrating time-honored crafts such as basket weaving, chair bottoming, pottery making, blacksmithing and more. The term quilling was derived from the feather quill used to roll the thin strips of paper. The concept involves rolling, gluing and shaping the paper into a design. Quilling is believed to have started in China shortly after the discovery of papermaking, although it is also attributed to 13th century nuns, and the American colonies.

Gourds of all shapes and sizes will be on display in the new “Gourd House.” Members of the Alabama Gourd Society and other gourd artists will be on hand to share what all there is to know about gourds and will exhibit a variety of arts and crafts made from gourds. The Festival also welcomes the Alabama Folklife Association (AFA) as a partner this year. The AFA will provide information and demonstrations on a variety of folklife art.

The “Down on the Farm” area also features tractors ranging from antiques to today’s state of the art farming equipment. Members of the Lawrence County Classic Tractor and Engine Club will have approximately thirty antique tractors on display and will be available to share stories and discuss the importance of farming and preservation of farming equipment. In addition, the Club is providing peddle tractors for children to ride and is sponsoring a Peddle Tractor Pull on both days of the festival.

The 6th annual event is set for April 10-11, 2010 at the Lions Club Fairgrounds in Moulton, Alabama. For more information, visit www.AlabamaChickenandEggFestival.com.
