March 30, 2010 - PRLog -- Michigan From the Heart’s main fund raising charity golf event, scheduled for June 6, 2010 at the University of Michigan Golf Course, recently announced the Co-Chairs for the widely attended event. The Co-Chairs for this year’s event are former University of Michigan standouts Jimmy King and Anthony Thomas.

According to Jimmy King, Michigan From the Heart has given him many positives memories. Jimmy describes one such memory - “As a young member of the basketball team, I was part of a visit to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital through the Michigan From the Heart program.  During that visit, my teammate Juwan Howard met a devout 12-year-old Michigan basketball fan named Randy. Even though Randy was very weak and had not been eating, Juwan offered encouragement by inviting him to come to one of our games.

Several weeks later, Randy found the strength to walk from the tunnel entrance at Crisler Arena to his seats just behind our bench.  We found out later that he didn’t want us to see him using a wheelchair.  Juwan introduced him to everyone and even though he was exhausted, Randy joined us in the locker room after the game.

Randy was able to attend a few more games that season and we returned the favor by visiting him in the hospital. He was a true inspiration to me and my teammates and we helped each other a great deal.  He taught us that relationships and friendships are more important than anything we might accomplish as athletes.  Randy became an honorary member of our team that season.  He made the ‘Fab Five’ the ‘Fab Six.’”

For nearly 20 years, Michigan From the Heart has served as an inspiration to both University of Michigan student-athletes and the pediatric patients and families of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.  On Thursday evenings, Michigan From the Heart arranges visits to the hospital by student-athletes who offer a welcome distraction by spending time with patients and families.  Patients are then given the opportunity to watch the athletes in action by attending University of Michigan sporting events as special guests of the team.  They even meet the players after their games for photos and autographs.  Michigan From the Heart provides further support to these children through their contributions to the hospital’s Child and Family Life department.

The funding to support this program is raised primarily through an annual golf outing and accompanying auction.  Even if you are unable to join us on the golf course, I hope you will consider participating in the online auction that will be open during the weeks preceding the outing.  Let your friends know as well.  Michigan From the Heart is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization operated entirely by unpaid volunteers.  Your entire donation will be used to fund activities that provide the patients and their families with memorable experiences that might seem out of reach during a difficult time.
