Since the release of the first Amazon Kindle ebook reader, the niche for these electronic devices has seen dramatic changes. In spite of the recent irruption into the market of several new readers, customers still seem to consider the latest versions of the Sony ebook reader and Kindle DX as the main reading devices to chose from. The battlefield, however, still seems to be dominated by the Kindle, due to a number of factors.
The criteria to establish which one is the best ebook reader is, of course, subjective. Not every person who buys a reading device has the same sort of use in mind ,and even if this were the case, priorities change from one customer to the next. However, there are a few points that are usually considered the most important ones when a potential buyer wants to compare ebook readers. For example, readability has been a big issue from the start and one of the main differences between an ebook reader and other devices like laptops, or even the iPhone and the iPad. In this field, the Kindle DX justifies its supremacy with its 9.7'' screen (almost 3'' bigger than Sony reader biggest model's), the latest e-ink technology and imppecable definition of both images and text. "This feature alone justifies the investment"- tells us John Houston, from Denver, a Kindle DX owner and once buyer of the first Sony reader that entered the market. "Images look great and it feels almost like reading from paper.", he adds.
Even though the Sony ebook reader seems to be doing its best to catch up with the Kindle reading device, other features such as international wireless connectivity (now available for Kindle 2 and Kindle DX) and a memory capacity to store around 3,500 ebooks (about 3.5 times Sony reader's storage capacity), still keep the Kindle a few steps ahead. Also, being a Kindle customer gives any person access to the enormous amount of content on Amazon shelves. As a result, the number of items sold by all versions of the Kindle ebook reader has turned this product into the best sold item at Amazon, as well as the device with the biggest share of the electronic book readers market nowadays.
