Chrysler Group LLC celebrated the launch of its new Pentastar V-6 engine Friday, March 19th 2010 at its new Trenton South Engine Plant, the Detroit News and other media reported.
The Detroit News said the new line of V-6 engines will contribute to an overall fuel-efficiency improvement of more than 25 percent across the Chrysler, Ram Truck, Jeep and Dodge lineup. The more refined and fuel-efficient Pentastar engine ultimately will replace seven current Chrysler Group V-6 engines and use advanced technologies from the Fiat alliance such as Multiair, direct-injection and turbocharging, the News noted.
The Automotive News said the redesigned 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which goes into production in the second quarter, will be the first vehicle to get the engine. The Pentastar will account for about 40 percent of all Chrysler Group engines by 2014 and will make a big contribution to Chrysler's goal of improving fuel economy by 2014, the Automotive News said.
Truck Trend noted that in its initial form, the 3.6-liter Pentastar engine will feature all-aluminum construction with flex-fuel capability, being able to run on either E85 ethanol or regular 87 octane gasoline. It will produce 280 horsepower at 6400 rpm, along with 260 pound-feet of torque at 4800 rpm, and 90 percent of peak torque is available from 1600 to 6400 rpm, Truck Trend said.
