Atlético started very well and 10 minutes into the match, Reyes opened the score for the Colchoneros. Trailing at half-time, Pellegrini’s team returned to the pitch determined to turn the result, which didn’t take long when Xabi Alonso equalized, following a corner at 49m.

A few minutes later, defender Aberloa received a fantastic pass from Xabi Alonso, found some space on the right, passed an opponent and put Real in front at 55m. Argentine Higuain scored his 23rd goal in La Liga and Real Madrid’s 3rd of the night at 62 minutes, after heading against the post just 2 minutes earlier.

This goal put the Merengues up 3-1, but did not last long as they would suffer a second goal, scored by the Uruguayan Diego Forlan, from the penalty spot after Xabi Alonso touched the ball with his hand at 67m.

This was Atlético’s seventh home defeat in the last eight league games against their rivals Real Madrid and despite the distance between the two teams in the Spanish League (Atlético is 8th), the game is not without the main ingredients of a classic.

One of the reasons is the fact that both teams have some of the great players of our time: Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, Kaká (Brazil) and Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuain for Real Madrid, with the other Argentine Kun Aguero and Diego Forlan of Uruguay, for Atletico.

Even though Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t score he was satisfied with Real Madrid’s performance and victory against Atlético Madrid in the derby. “We played well and created many chances. We presented ourselves with great personality and I’m glad this is happening with this group,” he began.

“We have attitude, but we can not enter the game losing. If we score first it’s hard for any team to take on this Real Madrid”, he said, referring to the early goal by the “Colchoneros”.

Real’s derby win returned them to the “La Liga” leadership, level on points with Barcelona, who had beaten Mallorca 1-0 yesterday.
