Consumer Reports survey says: 26 percent of Americans would consider an electric vehicle (EV) for their next purchase. This is extremely good considering that hybrid vehicles – an established technology – comprise less than three percent of U.S. new vehicle sales today. The Nissan Leaf, the Coda sedan, the BYD e6, the Mitsubishi iMIEV, the Ford Transit van, the Tesla roadster, the EMC Dacia truck are REAL EV you can order NOW. There is a lot of noise also in the EVmini league with Tata Nano EV announcement and the Chrysler E500 or EVadapt answer this month. There is of course a Pléiade of developments in the Electric Vehicle front most slated for introduction in 2011 and 2012 as the race is on to be the first to dominate the EV market. So goes the EV conversation these days, as it seems certain that the EV-revolution that was stifled by Big Oil and pundits, for years, is now upon us.
So I had a few conversations of my own about EV with different friends, each a Pal, who wanted to capitalize on the transportation paradigm shift and dominate the EV industry sector they were targeting. The first is a very prominent banker/investor who shared with me his dream of being the EV Pay Pal as E-pay for all EV transactions on and off line. The second, a magazine and media Tycoon, told me he wanted to dominate the Electric Vehicle sector by becoming the EV Pen Pal for millions of EV enthusiasts, readers, surfers and consumers. Yet I conversed with another one, an entrepreneur extraordinaire who swore he would become the top franchise distributor not only for EV Purchase And Lease but also for EV Parts, Accessories & Labor.
As I reflect on what they all wanted I realize they would need to be in possession of the one most powerful Key that opens the door to the EV PortAL. One short, memorable yet powerful brand that would fit anything EV you could name, whether it is a payment system, a magazine or resource, a product or device, a service, information or education provider. Without a doubt, I will not remember the names of all the individuals I speak with as I go on having more conversations about EV, but one thing is certain: they will all remember mine.
