Boulder technology company, Amadeus Consulting, is offering to help local businesses upgrade their applications on web browsers, specifically from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 6 which was first released in 2001.
Internet Explorer 6, or IE6, has all but been abandoned by web developers and many websites. In fact, even Google announced that its popular “apps” services will no longer be supporting IE6. Even so, almost 20 percent of Internet users still browse the web with IE6. Amadeus Consulting even reports that 13 percent of the visits to its site are on IE6.
“The concern about using Internet Explorer 6 is it still has an alarming number security holes, much more than any other major browser currently on the market,” said John Basso, CIO at Amadeus Consulting. “Plus, upgrading to IE7, or preferably IE8, will provide greater compatibility with modern web standards, which results in a better experience for users.”
Amadeus Consulting is also offering to help companies prepare for Internet Explorer 9, which was announced at Microsoft Mix this week, and is expected to debut late this year.
In addition to new versions of Internet Explorer, there are also other non-Microsoft browser options available, including Google’s Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or the popular Opera web browser.
“The benefit to each of these browsers, including all versions of Internet Explorer, is that they are all available for free,” Basso said. “There is no purchase price, no download fee, and no subscription. It is a free way for people to update their technologies, increase their efficiency and bolster their security.”
Amadeus Consulting is concerned that by using outdated technologies companies are exposing themselves to severe security risks and increased downtime. To help combat this, Amadeus Consulting is even offering to help companies upgrade any proprietary internal software that depends on IE6.
Upgrades to newer versions of Internet Explorer or other browsers usually do not require hardware or other software upgrades, and in most cases will actually improve a computer’s performance.
