ScanTech Sciences Presents at Lockheed Martin-sponsored Investor Showcase

March 26, 2010 - PRLog -- Arlington, TX – March 22, 2010 – ScanTech Sciences, a developer of advanced food-treatment systems, was selected as a top Texas Emerging Technology Fund presenter this year at WBTshowcase (World’s Best Technologies).

The event, held during the week of March 15 in Arlington, TX, provides commercial market exposure to innovative technology firms from around the world. Attending this year’s event, which was sponsored by Lockheed Martin, were venture capitalists and other investors from Silicon Valley to New York.

In January, ScanTech Sciences was awarded $2 million from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund (ETF) to spin out of parent company ScanTech Holdings, to move from Atlanta to Houston, and to conduct “electronic cold-pasteurization” research with Texas A&M University.

Chip Starns, vice president of ScanTech Sciences, said the company was one of 16 ETF recipients invited to present at the showcase. Over 100 applied.

“They were looking for advanced technologies that were ready to be commercialized,” Starns said. “They were also looking for highly compelling market drivers.”

ScanTech Sciences has developed an electronic cold-pasteurization system that provides cost-effective and environmentally-friendly food-treatment solutions. The company’s technology shoots harmless electricity through produce and other foods. Traditional treatment systems, on the other hand, often involve intense heat or dangerous chemicals.

Immediate applications for ScanTech Sciences’ technology include treating produce coming from Mexico into the United States.

“Investors we talked with were impressed with our system and understood the challenges facing our global food supply,” Starns said. “Those challenges include increasing shelf life and killing insects and bacteria that sicken hundreds of millions of people every year.”

One-third of past WBTshowcase presenters have secured private equity or partnering agreements. To date, presenters have raised more than $450 million in venture capital.
