Oppositional Defiant Disorder in children implies the act of disobeying and arguing with parents or authorities. Having received warm care and being pampered all the time by parents during childhood, children naturally develop a sense of stubbornness. Oppositional defiance behavior starts developing at the age of two to three years and also at early adolescence stage. Defiant children often behave rudely and utter harsh language as they can’t resist following their own predispositions. This definitely creates rigid boundaries around their psychological pattern, thereby making them rule their own judgments. Some of the other major symptoms of Oppositional Defiant Disorder include short-temperedness, inability to accord with adult requests, lack of answerability, blaming others, annoyingness, and revengeful attitude. This psychological state is linked with another important problem called Reactive Attachment Disorder where a child avoids maintaining contact with anyone and prefers aloofness because of not being having nurtured with sufficient care.

The exact reasons for Oppositional defiance attitude have not been identified yet. However, according to a developmental theory, some children face this behavior disorder following the separation from primary care-givers during childhood. That moment might have been proved to be painful as small children develop a bond with the person handling them from the very beginning. This process is interpreted as persistence of certain matters not being settled during childhood. This again is a major cause of Reactive Attachment Disorder.

On the flipside, learning theory considers negative attitude shown by parents or authority people towards children as one of the causes of Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Parents and authority figures often use compelling methods to impose their views, which may result into Oppositional defiance on part of children.

According to some studies, about twenty percent of school-goers are under the grip of this kind of behavior disorder and is most common among boys. Qualified medical professionals or psychologists provide appropriate measures for this problem. The child has to undergo an observation test where his past activities, relationship with family members and friends, and behavior are profoundly analyzed by the professional. However, the type of treatment to be given depends from child to child. For some children, it may include Parent Management Training Programs which teach parents to tackle the child’s negative attitude. On the other hand, sometimes professionals may opt for Individual Psychotherapy to make child learn effective anger management. Similarly, Family Psychotherapy, Cognitive Problem Solving Skills Training, and Social Skills Training Program can also be suggested on a situational basis.

Parents can avoid the occurrence of such disorders by applying effective techniques of managing their child’s behavior from the beginning. They must always keep boosting the morale of their child. Force and pressure hamper his mental growth. So, he should be handled with care and affection. Furthermore, parents must sustain cordial relations with the child’s teachers and other adults dealing with him.
