Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) is a psychological syndrome found in small children who are seldom taken adequate care of. Always craving for affection and warm treatment, children develop a sense of detachment when not given required attention. This phenomenon generally happens between the ages of six months and three years and creates cognitive barriers disallowing a child to come in contact with any person. This feeling of non-involvement keeps on growing, thereby resulting into reactive attachment disorder.

Small children feel uneasy on being shifted frequently to multiple care-givers. They miss that same warmth in the hands of alternative care-givers once they become habitual of being pampered by primary care-givers. Sometimes, the care-givers lack strong parenting skills due to which they are incapable of nurturing the child in a smooth way. Factors responsible for Reactive Attachment Disorder also include separation and teenage of parents. In both the cases, a child does not receive complete care.

The problem of Attachment Disorder reflects attitudinal transformations in the form of mood and behavior. A child is incapable of indulging into social bonds and relationships. Apart from avoiding the care-giver, he refrains from coming in physical contact with anyone. All these acts undoubtedly drag him into the clutches of isolation and make him a defiant child.

For RAD treatment, medical professionals undertake a systematic approach where involvement of both, child and his family members, is indispensable. The expert initiates with a contemplated study to dig out relevant facts like the child’s upbringing, reason for his improper care, and his behavior disorder. This session ends with the establishment of a relation between the child and his family members where efforts are to be made to strengthen future ties. At this stage, it is very crucial on part of parents to become concerned about the mental progress of their child so that he could realize and tap his abilities for tasks ahead. This paves a developmental path for him and he gets rid of problems like behavior disorder and oppositional defiance.

Reactive Attachment Disorder is inevitable if parents are attentive to their children’s needs from the very beginning. Especially, people who are in the process of adoption should always remain alert. As far as, care-givers are concerned, they must possess good parenting skills and look for a safe and secure environment for the child.
