PRLog - Mar. 24, 2010 - One of the first pieces of construction equipment that kids learn about and recognize is what is called a Backhoe Loader. This machine has long become one of the most popular machines on job sites all throughout the world because of its versatility and maneuverability. If this is a machine that you are wondering if you should purchase or not, as with any purchase, it is a good idea to do some research to see if your business can get enough use out of this piece of equipment to make the cost worthwhile.

A lot of new contractors have only enough money to purchase one machine so they end of going with a backhoe loader because it is one of the only machines you can purchase that can do two machine's jobs fairly well: A Wheel Loader and an Excavator. Here is some information on the task you can do with a backhoe loader.

1. Loader End: The front end of this machine is the part of the machine that functions closely to a wheel loader. There is usually a bucket around 2.5 cubic yards that one can use to move material, dig into a bank, or fill a trench. If all you will be doing all day long is digging material and loading a dump truck, a wheel loader will probably suit your needs better but if you have a use for this application once in a while, a back hoe loader will work just find. Also on this front end you can attach a pair of forks for lifting up pallets, a broom for cleaning off surfaces, and even a clam bucket that will allow you to pinch material or stumps between your bucket. Remember that because this machine is not a wheel loader, you will not have the visibility that you normally have in that type of machine nor the stability because of the excavator back end.

2. Back End: The back end of a back hoe loader is very similar to an excavator. What the operator will do is spin his or her chair around and then operate the back end of the machine. Usually the back end of the machine is used 70 percent of the time and the front end of the machine 30 percent of the time. This stat means that if you are going to purchase one of these machines, you will want to make sure if you demo or try out the machine that you are sure to run the back end to see how well you like it. The controls that work the excavator portion of this machine should be of keen importance as well because different operators like different types of controls.
