After concluding its regular 2010 legislative session and after nearly two weeks of a special session without a balanced budget, Seattle Biz Coach Terry Corbell calls out the Washington State Legislature.
“There is no balanced budget. There are no efficiencies. Worse, there is little transparency about accounting and taxpayer assets,” says The Biz Coach (http://www.bizcoachinfo.com).
“By extension, it’s clear that Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown is not passing the transparency test of good, open government,”
He says lawmakers have failed to create a good economic environment and jobs for the private sector. Instead, they’re allowing tremendous waste.
“For example, state employees are allowed to carry forward and cash out their unused sick leave, which costs at least $65 million annually,” he points out. “This is perk you rarely see, if ever, for taxpayers in the private sector.”
He says the largest employer in Washington, 17.6 percent of the workforce, is government. The retail sector is second with 10.8 percent.
“
Unfunded health retiree benefits total $7.9 billion,” he says. “Meantime, the state lawmakers continue to outspend revenue. Washington taxpayers deserve a good economy.”
