Herman Stiphout and his son Martijn expect to cover about 1,125 miles (1,800km) of Baja Peninsula coastline in two wooden boats which they built from plans. They will be traveling on the eastern coast of the peninsula, from the northern end to the southernmost tip, rowing and paddling in the Sea of Cortez. Most of the time they will be camping on isolated beaches.
The Baja Peninsula is the longest peninsula on earth, 760 miles (1,120km) long and having 2,038 miles (3,280km) of coastline. It is mostly desert and mountains and most of it is sparsely populated. It has hundreds of miles of pristine beaches.
The boats they are using are an Odyssey 180 touring rowboat with a FrontRower forward facing rowing system and a type of sea kayak called a baidarka.
They began their journey on Feb. 26, 2010. You can read more about their adventure and follow their progress on their blog www.bajapaddle.com.
