La Semilla (The Seed) is an organization that works mostly with children of low-income families. They noticed that many of the poorest children get the lowest grades in school, so most of their work is dedicated to improving the level of education among these children. They address this problem on many fronts: leadership building exercises, homework help, working with child labourers, teaching about health and hygiene, and also working with the mothers of these children. La Semilla works in several different slums, each with its own distinct characteristics. In Huachipa, much of the population has been displaced due to political violence. In Carabayllo, there is a large dump where there are many child labourers and the community faces health problems. In communities like these La Semilla works mainly with children of low-income families but also works with the mothers of these children.
