Publiclínico Parroquial Belén is a medical clinic in Cusco that was founded by a priest to address the issue of many poor people in and around Cusco not having access to affordable quality healthcare.
The clinic is non-profit and while its services are available to everyone, most of its patients are of very socio-economic status. They provide diverse medical services, including emergency medical attention; physiotherapy;
Their main building is in Cusco, and serves about 50 people a day, usually people of low income. They also make frequent trips to four different communities:
Policlínico Parroquial Belén is a busy clinic and could always use extra people to help with the work load. The clinic not only works in Cusco but also does regular outreach clinics to try and reach individuals in the surrounding communities. Volunteers are needed to not only help at the clinic but to go on the outreach programs. The volunteers are needed so that the clinic can reach their primary goal which is to make health care more accessible to all individuals in their region regardless of economic-status. The more people who are working with the staff at the clinic the more people they are going to be able to serve and provide for.
Volunteers can assist by doing the following tasks:
The tasks you will be doing at this placement depend greatly on your level of experience and area of specialty (if any). Those with less experience can help out by helping with triage, working in the pharmacy, assisting doctors and nurses, teaching about hygiene and teeth brushing, and helping with basic first aid. Those with more specialized experience can certainly put their skills to good use!
Other tasks that you may be requested to preform outside of your core duties:
Accompany the other doctors on trips into the surrounding communities to provide medical attention to those who are unable to travel into Cusco.
