Hampy is a non-profit organization, created in November 2004, whose central objectives are:
To provide sustainable development at local, regional and national levels.
To innovate methods of teaching Spanish to foreigners through interactive, fun and experiential classes.
To innovate volunteer work through well-organized and structured projects.
To create preventive therapy and health programs
Hampy is currently working on projects in several public and private institutions within the Andean city of Cusco and the province of Acomayo, in addition to pilot projects in the rural communities of Chocco and Kuychiro. All of their endeavours must meet basic requirements in keeping with Hampy's general mandate - to develop programmes that have a therapeutic, preventative and rehabilitative focus in the areas of physical and mental health, education and economic and ecologic resource management.
This placement needs volunteers because One of the largest projects currently running within the community of Chocco is a youth group that meets three times per week. The primary focus of this group is to proactively reach and educate the next generation of Chocco in an attempt to increase their awareness of the potential for growth within the community. Each two-hour session includes training on how to run a small business; English language training; teamwork activities and problem-solving skills.
Chocco has social problems like teen pregnancy, alcoholism and domestic violence. These issues need to be addressed so that solutions can be found to ensure the safety and well-being of the next generation in Chocco.
Volunteers can assist by doing the following tasks:
The members of this group work collaboratively to set and accomplish realistic goals for the community. The project is designed to help the youth develop ways of generating employment opportunities for themselves as well as building a more economically secure future for the community.
We are attempting to address Choccos social problems at the source. We also want to improve the communitys economy through the following activities: 1. Eco-hikes through the community and surrounding area with local guides (children and teenagers). These hikes present a guide to local plants and flowers and how they are used in everyday life. The hikes are being marketed to the local community and tourists in order to put money back into the community.
2. Selling hand-woven items (made by the women from the community) to the tourist groups.
3. A childrens crafts market directed at the tourist groups.
4. Eco-camps in the Chocco community. A camp is being built where locals/tourists can stay overnight.
5. Helping to plant trees.
6. Cleanning the river campaign (to organize and promote an activitie in the school and in the community).
7. To start a campaign to promote the 3R´s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Specific activities for volunteers:
