New AABB Standards for Legal Paternity Tests in Arizona

Having a legal, or court admissible, paternity test requires following individual state statutes which typically require the analysis of the DNA samples by an AABB accredited laboratory.  Recently the AABB released their 9th edition of Standards for Relationship Testing Laboratories which went into effect on January 1, 2010.  

These standards apply to all legal paternity tests. Standard 5.2.2 Collection has been strengthened with the following additional language: “Collection materials shall only be sent directly to collectors and/or witnesses.  Collection materials shall not be in the possession of any of the tested parties either before or after collection.” This new language prohibits the selling of legal home test kits or sending kits to tested parties.  This further prohibits tested parties from collecting themselves.

The AABB also has set specific rules for the use of its brand and logo.  They include:
•   Unlicensed use of the AABB logo is not permitted.
•   Only accredited AABB Institutional Members in good standing may use the “AABB Accredited” logo.
•   Use of AABB logos is not permitted on products or packaging.
•   AABB Affiliates may not use any AABB logos in any form or for any purpose.
•   While AABB appreciates the decision of brokers and other third-parties to use facilities accredited by AABB, use of AABB logos on websites or other promotional material of these third-party entities is strictly prohibited.
