In Escaping Death’s Sting, A Combat Marine’s Life Story, author Joel Lee Russell teaches us that the most compelling way to learn to love something is to realize how close you are to losing it. Loss and trauma have not been strangers in Russell’s life. You will be spellbound by his revelations of a tortured childhood and a traumatic deployment in Vietnam during the height of the Tet Offensive. You will be captivated by the gripping tale of Russell’s Marine outfit, which dwindled from 250 men to 79 in a matter of four hours. During that ordeal, Russell beseeches God to save him and promises to dedicate his life to matters bigger than himself. Escaping Death’s Sting, A Combat Marine’s Life Story is a gripping tale describing how Russell, who was nicknamed “Last Days Joel,” repeatedly escapes death’s sting and then opens himself to a divine beauty that soars beyond what he had ever imagined was humanly possible.
