NACME - SME Education Foundation Scholarship Offered

A new scholarship offered by The National Council for Minorities in Engineering, Inc. (NACME) and the SME Education Foundation rewards the academic excellence of minorities pursuing manufacturing engineering education.

NACME — SME Education Foundation Scholarship Offered

DEARBORN, Mich., — The Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation and The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, Inc. (NACME), announce a new scholarship, the NACME/SME-EF Scholarship Program. The new scholarship provides an award to one student at $5,000 each year for two years toward the cost of an engineering education. The new scholarship was created to reward academic excellence and promote achievement in an engineering and/or technical discipline.

Scholarship eligibility requires student applicants be: Junior or senior-level African American, Latino/a or American Indian; United States citizens or United States permanent residents; be outstanding academic achievers with a minimum grade point average (G.P.A.) of at least 3.0/4.0 and remain in good standing, demonstrate financial need, and be enrolled as a full-time student in one of the following institutions:

•   Illinois Institute of Technology
•   Kansas State University
•   Kettering University
•   Missouri University of Science and Technology
•   Polytechnic University of NYU
•   Rensselaer Polytechnic University
•   Rochester Institute of Technology
•   University of California, San Diego
•   University of Kentucky
•   University of Southern California
•   University of Texas, El Paso

The Application Process requires the following: The completion of a NACME/SME-EF Scholarship Application, Undergraduate Academic Transcript, Letter of Recommendation, Personal Statement detailing student’s academic/career goals, Current Resume (using provided template), Essay Question (minimum of one page, but no more than two pages).

Scholarship recipients will be notified and must submit verification of full-time enrollment in an accredited engineering program. Questions regarding the submission of the scholarship application should be directed to msimpson@nacme.org  Completed applications must be postmarked by April 30, 2010 and should be returned to:

NACME has distributed applications for the new scholarship to selected NACME partner institutions that offer manufacturing engineering programs. They will screen and review applications, nominate scholars to the SME Education Foundation for final selections, disburse payments, monitor enrollment and track academic progress, and develop a selection timeline with a representative of the SME Education Foundation.

The SME Education Foundation – celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year, has invested over $4.5 million in youth programs, helping over 10,000 young people to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); granted over $4.2 million in scholarships to students studying manufacturing-related programs and invested $17.3 million in grants to thirty-five (35) colleges and universities to develop industry-driven curricula.
