Viasat
The Scandinavian switch from analog to digital TV signal did not pass without complications. Last year viewers all over Scandinavia, especially those relying on analog antennas, had to invest in new TV equipment and decide on a number of complicated matters. One of the major issues was the choice between MPEG2 or MPEG4 tuner.
Currently most channels rely on the MPEG2 signal, however from 1 January 2012, due to capacity issues, the most popular Danish channels will be sent via the MPEG4 signal on DTT, effectively rendering MPEG2 tuners obsolete. As a result, certain viewers will end up having to invest in new equipment all over again in just a few years.
Meanwhile, satellite-based companies like Viasat offer customers a convenient and simple solution to this dilemma. Because there are no capacity issues connected with the satellite solution, companies like Viasat can keep on broadcasting via MPEG2 – even after 1 January 2012.
This means that satellite customers do not have to worry about investing in an MPEG4-tuner, as their current equipment will be able to support all satellite channels indefinitely.
