Realizing that she could utilize some of the newest social networking tools, Ms. LaBon created a fan page on Facebook in order to create an easy way for fans to follow some of her activities including future book readings and appearances, upcoming book projects, and other endeavors. Her Facebook Fan Page also includes photos and discussions initiated by Ms. LaBon. She invites fans to “connect” with her on Facebook and to write on her “wall.”
In addition, Ms. LaBon is also adding new elements to her website at www.cocolabon.com. There is a video page where kids can preview and purchase videos from Amazon.com, and there is also a new poll on the first page where kids can vote on the types of books they like, and then view the results in real-time. Ms. LaBon hopes to post a new poll every month which will help kids learn a new task; voting. This will also encourage kids to become adept at developing opinions, and teach them to be independent thinkers. Even at a young age, this is an important part of growing and learning. A free activity book is also available on the website to accompany “The Legend of the Chocolate River.” Parents and teachers can download and print the activity book to explore with their children or students.
Earlier this month, Ms. LaBon was invited to do a book reading for Alexandria Country Day School where 13 second graders had written personal fan letters about “The Legend of the Chocolate River.” She was extremely happy to visit the school and the kids were excited to have a real author visit their class, read the book, and personally respond to their letters.
