Follow on Google News | Baird Report Supports The Recent Changes To Australia's Skilled Migration Program. The Baird report that supports the changes to the skilled migration program announced in Feb 2010 that remove the incentives for overseas students applying to study in Australia in order to obtain permanent residence.
By: Immigration To Australia The changes announced to the Australian Skilled Migration program has a new and more targeted skilled occupations list that is more focused on skills that will address Australia's future skills needs. The changes which see an end of the Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL) will be replaced by the new targeted skills occupations list. Overseas students currently studying in Australia who have a vocational higher education or postgraduate Visa will still be able to apply for permanent residency if their occupation is ON the new skilled occupations list to be released later in 2010. Overseas students currently studying in Australia on a higher education or postgraduate visa whose occupation is NOT on the skilled occupations list will be allowed to spend up to eighteen months living in Australia to allow them to find an Australian employer to sponsor them for a Visa. The planned changes to Australia's skilled Migration program will not effect any international students studying in Australia who plan to return to their home country after their studying in Australia is completed. The Baird report, by Bruce Baird, a former Australian Member of Parliament, recommended a tougher national accreditation and tougher protection for foreign students. Mr Baird felt that some schools were taking advantage of international students wanting to study in Australia. Mr Baird also commented on the recent attacks on Indian students studying in Australia. " The recent attacks on young Indian students has saddened me as an Australian. It is extremely disappointing to see Australia's reputation as a safe and tolerant country damaged."
