, PA (Mar. 18, 2010) — Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is proud to applaud the service efforts that a group of students recently completed.  As other students were vacationing with friends or visiting family, five CU students participated in an “alternative spring break” activity to benefit the inner-city children of Philadelphia in collaboration with City Year.

City Year unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world.  Dorothy Wong, City Year Project Leader, said, “The College volunteers participated in several projects such as painting the school hallways and activities like trivia games with the students.  They also were very excited to have the opportunity to meet Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter.”

City Year is a non-profit organization that benefits 22 schools in the Philadelphia region and addresses the needs of the schools through physical and educational projects.  According to Wong, City Year has helped schools who have experienced a rise in violence by providing conflict resolution and diversity awareness workshops. One of their goals, by engaging the young adults to help the younger students, is to build a citizen service movement that is larger than the organization.

Dr. Suzanne Phillips, Vice President of Student Affairs and Student Life, said, “This shows Cheyney University’s commitment to community service and the young people of our region.  Thanks to the City Year program, our students have been provided another opportunity to develop the strong leadership skills that have been part of the legacy of this institution.”

The five CU students who participated in the week of service were: Keystone Honors Academy (KHA) Seniors Naomii Collier and Kevin Walker, along with KHA Sophomore Dominique Daniels, Beams Scholar Senior Brandon Harrison, and Sophomore Nathan Young.

Student Nathan Young said, “I believe in giving back.  The best part was getting to meet new people and come together with Cheyney (University) students.” Student Dominique Daniels said, “The most rewarding aspect of this week was seeing the children problem solve with adults during the group activities.”
