March 19, 2010 - PRLog -- VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The National High School Wrestling Championships become what is truly a family affair as it heads into its third decade. That’s because the 4th annual NHSCA National Elementary and Middle School Wrestling Championships will be held alongside its nationally-renowned High School Division showcase once again, March 23-26 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

Every wrestler who has placed in the top 8 in his official NHSCA State Championship has been invited to compete in this event. An intricate qualification system is in place that is challenging and demands a high level of performance from middle and elementary school wrestlers around the country, each of whom must place at his home state’s official NHSCA State Championship to qualify. The top eight finishers in each weight class will receive awards and will appear on a wrestling poster that is mailed to over 15,000 fans. This is a showcase for future high school wrestling superstars.

Each competitor also will have the opportunity to score points for his state. The top three states will receive team awards, and the winning state will take home the National Championship Cup to display at their State Championships.

For the first time, the action from all 30 mats will be broadcast live on the NHSCA’s web site, www.nhsca.com. More than 3,000 matches will be wrestled throughout the event, believed to be the first of its kind with 30 different feeds on a single grid.

The nation was well represented in last year’s event. The Elementary Division’s 12 champions came from 11 different states. The only state with more than one champion was New York, which claimed titlists Aaron Paddock (85 pounds) and Nick McShea (112). Ryan Hansen of Utah, the 60-pound champion, won the division’s Most Falls award with three pins in a combined 3:09.

Utah led all states with four individual champions in the Middle School Division. Taking titles for Utah were Dusty Hone (80 pounds), Dalton Harmon (100), Grant Lamont (112) and Zachary Coffman (142).

Kentucky and Pennsylvania each crowned three champions. Taking top honors from Kentucky: Sean Fausz (85), Jayce Carr (119) and Samuel Preston (165). Pennsylvania’s Bryce Killian (95), who won four matches to claim the division’s largest weight class, was voted the meet’s Outstanding Wrestler. Zach Elvin (70) and Zack Brydon (230) also claimed titles for Pennsylvania. New York’s Burke Paddock, the 135-pound champion, won the division’s Most Falls award with three pins in a combined 3:05.

New Jersey, New York and Virginia each crowned two Middle School Division champions and Maryland had one.
