Pistachio and Popcorn – This Is Church?

New Day Church Visits the Theater and Finds the Neighborhood

March 19, 2010 - PRLog -- KETTERING, Ohio –Meeting in a local movie theater proved to be an added attraction for New Day Church www.newdaysbc.com as adults worshipped in one theater while kids watched the premiere of the latest VeggieTales movie in another.

New Day Church normally meets at Kettering Recreation Center but moved its services to a nearby theater at a mall for one week when the rec center was unavailable. Using the change in venue as vehicle for a special outreach event, New Day partnered with Big Idea, Inc.  www.bigidea.com and took advantage of the big screen at Cinema De Lux 14 at The Greene to premiere the newest VeggieTales movie Pistachio: the Little Boy who Woodn’t prior to its release on DVD. Attendance by children spiked, including several newcomers, along with their parents, according to Pastor Barry Jude www.broadlf.com/NewDay/blog/.

“Many who attended that day came not to worship, but for a movie,” Jude said. “But we’re okay with that. Inviting kids and their parents to watch a movie gave us an opportunity to make a gift of wholesome entertainment with a moral and spiritual message—and introduce them to our church at the same time. We considered it an opportunity to make a positive first impression and let families get to know us in an environment that is familiar to them.”

Although many parents watched the movie with their kids, others attended worship in an adjacent theater, and four accepted Christ, according to Jude.

Since its launch almost a year ago, New Day Church has met at five sites, including a hotel, the recreation center, a children’s community playhouse and the mall cinema.

“Instead of making a temporary change in venue a cause of concern, we’ve learned that God can use it to help us meet new people,” Jude said. “Although there are certain benefits to having a stable, permanent place to worship, New Day Church is not afraid to make a move—and we have come to expect God to move whenever we do.”
