Today at the Harlem YMCA’s 40th National Salute to Black Achievers in Industry Awards at the New York Marriott Marquis, Dr. Gwendolyn B. Lee, National President of The Links, Inc., will receive the Dr. Leo B. Marsh Memorial Award.
“It was the vision of Dr. Leo B. Marsh, a financial consultant for the Harlem YMCA, to create the Black Achievers in Industry Awards 40 years ago to foster ongoing interaction between African-American youth and adults who had distinguished themselves,”
Previous award winners have included Dr. Johnetta H. Cole, Bennett College; Ralph Dickerson, Jr., United Way of NYC; Adelaide Sanford, NYS Board of Regents; Dr. Lorraine Monroe, Frederick Douglass Academy; Dr. Calvin Butts, Abyssinian Baptist Church; and Marian Wright Edelman, Children’s Defense Fund. Other past honorees of the Harlem YMCA are Ossie Davis, Oprah Winfrey, Ed Bradley, Star Jones, Dr. Ben Carson, Earl Graves, Wilma Rudolph, Andrew Young, Alex Haley, Cissy Houston, Alex Trebek, Al Roker, Percy Sutton and Tipper Gore.
“I am truly humbled to be included in such a wonderful group of previous awardees,” stated Dr. Lee. “The Harlem YMCA does so much to create valuable and special opportunities for youth. Our future is indeed brighter because of their work and tireless dedication to our young people.”
Those who participated in the event included former Tennessee Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. who delivered the keynote address, “Celebrating Success, Developing Leaders and Cultivating Communities.”
Under the leadership of Dr. Lee, The Links, Inc. shares many goals with the Harlem YMCA. One of their program facets is Services to Youth. Members of The Links, Inc. regularly address critical issues that prevent youth from reaching their full potential. From scholarships to mentoring programs, The Links, Inc. takes a comprehensive approach to solving problems or addressing needs or issues within the communities they serve.
The Links, Incorporated is an international, women's non-profit, social welfare and service organization of over 12,000 members in 272 chapters across the United States, and the Bahamas. It was founded in 1946. From its inception, the organization's members have been developing and implementing programs that target issues affecting its members and communities. Community service has been the corner stone of the organization's outreach with members contributing more than two million documented hours of community service over the past three years. For the past 60 years, The Links, Incorporated has been internationally known for its programs that are focused on topics such as health, economics and education, youth, and policy efforts.
